NEWS  &  NOTES
  Neighbors in Need Special Offering
The annual United Church of Christ special offering in support of homeland mission work was received and celebrated at St. Andrew's Church during the worship service on Sunday, October 8, 2017. One-third of our gifts are dedicated to the work of the Council for American Indian Ministries, which oversees twenty native American U.C.C. congregations in the upper Midwest, as well as one multi-tribal church in Minneapolis. The remaining two-thirds of our gifts support U.C.C. advocacy and outreach efforts, including support for literacy programs, and direct service projects. Members of our St. Andrew's Church family will find a Neighbors in Need offering envelope in their 2017 envelope packets; additional envelopes are available on the literature rack in the church narthex. Checks can also be forwarded to the church office, payable to St. Andrew's U.C.C., with Neighbors in Need on the memo line.
Women of St. Andrew's Fall Candy Sale
The Women of St. Andrew's begin their fall candy making project the week of October 15, 2017. Peanut Butter Balls, Chocolate-Covered Marshmallows, and a limited quantity of Coconut Balls will be in production for four weeks. Candy making days are Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the four weeks ending Tuesday, November 7, 2017. All candy is offered for sale at $11 per pound, and candy is packed in half-pound boxes/bags. Candy will be available for purchase from Tuesday, October 17, 2017, until supplies are exhausted. Call the church office at (610) 375-8687 to order candy and/or to schedule special order pick-up times, or you can make your purchase on any Monday or Tuesday during the four-week production season. (Please enter St. Andrew's Church via the Miller Street doors.)
  Restroom Renovations
At the 2017 annual meeting of St. Andrew's United Church of Christ, the congregation voted to authorize restroom renovations at an estimated cost of $7500. The project included replacing the sinks and toilets in the church's restrooms, both on the main level, and those adjacent to the downstairs social hall. The work involved replacing a total of six bathroom sinks and seven toilets, plus, in order to comply with Reading City Codes, installing hot water lines to the downstairs bathroom sinks.

The work was completed on Tuesday/Wednesday, August 8/9, 2017. We thank all of our St. Andrew's Church family, members and friends, who contributed their gifts to our special restroom renovation appeal; gifts received exceeded our goal of $7500! We invite you to check out our new restroom facilities when you join us for Sunday morning worship!
  Statement of Financial Contributions
Statements of financial contributions for the third quarter of 2017 are available for pick-up in the church office. We encourage all members of our church family to check their statements to ensure that our records agree with yours.
  Coffee Fellowship Time
Coffee Fellowship is held once a month (except in July and August). We hope that you will join us for this special time together on the third Sunday of each month. All are invited to gather in Fellowship Hall at 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 15, 2017, as we continue our monthly Coffee Fellowship routine.
Altar Flower and Worship Bulletin Sponsor Information
The worship bulletin sponsor sign-up sheet for 2017 is posted on the narthex bulletin board. The cost per Sunday or special service remains $5; You can just enter your name to claim any available date, or call the church office, and we'll do it for you!

We also invite you to consider sponsoring our weekly altar flowers (or a memorial or honorarium bouquet); the cost is $40.50. All available dates for 2017 have been sponsored, but if you would be interested in picking up a Sunday or more in 2018, please contact the church office at (610) 375-8687, as there will be a number of open dates.
  Spirit on Tap
"Spirit on Tap" is a program to encourage theological discussion, explore alternative viewpoints, and stimulate dialogue around issues of faith and spirituality. Sponsored by area United Church of Christ congregations, Spirit on Tap gatherings are usually held on the fourth Tuesday of the month from September through May (check the schedule for occasional alterations in the routine) at 7 p.m. The new location for the ninth season of Spirit on Tap, beginning in September, 2017, is the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel, Reading.
  Food Pantry Sunday
The first Sunday of every month is Food Pantry Sunday. On that day our chest is placed in the church narthex to receive worshipers' gifts of non-perishable food items for our local food pantry. Foodstuffs are forwarded to St. Paul's Lutheran Church pantry in our own East Reading neighborhood, while monetary gifts are divided between our own U.C.C. Council for United Church Ministry in Reading, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church pantry.
Living Room Group - Narcotics Anonymous
The Living Room Group of Narcotics Anonymous has been meeting on Wednesday evenings in St. Andrew's Church's social hall for more than twenty-five years. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. each Wednesday; enter the building via the Miller Street entrance (side entrance).
  Redner's Save-A-Tape Program
St. Andrew's Church continues to participate in Redner's Markets' Save-A-Tape program, which enables us to receive a 1% rebate contribution from all eligible customer receipts we collect for submission. To participate, you must stop at the Customer Service desk or store office and obtain a Save-A-Tape Card (at no cost, and there are no forms to fill out); then present the card to the Redner's cashier whenever you check out, save your register tape, and place it in the box in the church office. Recently, we earned another $210.62 from this program.
Sharing Our Space with a Spanish Congregation
The Consistory has entered into an agreement with Discipulando las Naciones Church allowing the congregation to make use of St. Andrew's Church facilities. This non-denominational congregation conducts Sunday afternoon worship services as well as Tuesday and Friday evening activities in the downstairs classroom areas.

OUR CHURCH
The congregation of St. Andrew’s U.C.C. has been worshipping and serving in our community since 1891. The church is located in the residential neighborhood of East Reading. The hospitality is warm and the people are friendly. We gather for worship every Sunday at 10:30 am. (The weekly calendar at left will note special summer worship times from July 1 through Labor Day.) St. Andrew’s Church offers many opportunities for volunteering and service to others. So, come be challenged and refreshed, and find a place where YOU can make a difference in the world. You'll be glad that you did!
